The SERVICE ORGANIZATION SUMMIT (SOS) is the council of student organizations dedicated to fostering a student movement that addresses the challenges we face as a society through COMMUNITY SERVICE and SOCIAL ACTION at Drexel University.WE TAKE PRIDE IN COMPLETING OUR MISSION BY:
- PROMTING seven different community service organisations on campus!
- PROVIDING and coordinating opportunities for student organizations to collaborate on community service activities.
- EDUCATING and raising awareness by initiating campus-wide programs and events about global community issues.
- MARKETING - Assembles, publishes and distributes various projects and publicizes service opportunities.
- WEBSITE - Handles up keep and general maintenance of the website.
- EDUCATION & AWARENESS - Creates and oversees themed education and awareness programs for each term or year and coordinates larger scale events that coincide with the current theme.
- VOLUNTEERISM - Maintains online community service volunteer directory, expands volunteer resource library, and organizes large scale special community service events.
- ALTERNATIVE SPRING BREAK - Coordinates the Alternative Spring Break program.
- FINANCE - Coordinates fundraising for SOS, campus community service organizations and area charities, handles the upkeep of budget.
- Council Meetings: These meetings, which are attended by a representative from each Community Service Organization, are held monthly to discuss current progress and future events.
- Alternative Spring Break: A huge trip is planned every year to not only participate and promote community service, but to have tons of fun! In the past we've coordinated trips to Alabama, Florida, New Mexico, Virginia, New York, and New Orleans.
- National Volunteer Week: One week in April is devoted to enriching our lives through community service. This year National Volunteer Week is April 17 - 23, 2005; stay tuned to SOS for 2005 National Volunteer Week lineup!
- Campus Wide Speakers: Speakers come to Drexel and talk about a wide variety of topics designed to educate the audience and bring upon a lasting impression to encourage the performance of community service. Some of the past events SOS has arranged include bringing the AIDS memorial quilt to campus for AIDS/HIV awareness and organizing former Neo-Nazi Floyd Cochrain to speak on campus during an anti-violence education campaign.
