DUET is open to undergraduate riders of any ability, from the beginner through the show circuit veteran. DUET is a great way to spend time in the saddle and meet new people on campus!
DUET practices out of Reinbow's End at Great Scott Farm in Malven, PA – a short drive from campus. We lesson during the week under coach Nicki Finlayson, and travel to competitions on the weekends. The Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) holds shows within a two hour radius of Drexel. You can check out how the IHSA works at www.ihsainc.com
No, WillowMay provides us with different horses to ride at each lesson. At Intercollegiate competitions, competitors must ride horses that they are unfamiliar with, so it is important to learn how to ride all types of horses.
There are club dues each term. For example, this term each member paid $50. Members also pay for their horseshow classes, which are $23 each. The annual IHSA membership fee is $30. Riders are responsible for their own lesson and show clothing. We encourage those who are new to the sport to do some research and ask questions concerning the costs of clothing and equipment.
Some team members have cars, so we carpool. You don't have to have a car to be a member.
Being a member of DUET does take up some time, but our members have not had a problem juggling school and DUET. Lessoning once per week is about a 4 hour time commitment. An IHSA horseshow takes up one day of your weekend, but there are only 10 shows per year. We also get together as a team for fundraisers and get-togethers. Most of our members are involved in other activities and can be found on the Dean’s list!
