These are from the 2002 Navy & UMD weekend. Only the Iceman and myself were racing. As usual, the whole Castellan clan was there to back us up. These photos are all from Mrs. Castellan. The scanner I'm using didn't really do them justice, I'll have to find something better. Once I do I'll get some of the action shots scanned in.

This is us getting ready to take off for the Navy race from the Castellan homestead.

This is the start of the Navy race. Maybe 30 guys. The Atlantic conference is much smaller than the ECCC (almost half as many racers). This race would be even smaller, but they only run A through C races instead of A through D. In the background is the Naval Academy's hospital---very convenient to have it right on course.

This is us trying to figure out what the hell happened to me. Towards the end of the race my rear wheel just fell out of the dropout. The going theory is that I hadn't tightened it down enough. To my credit, it was a brand new wheelset and the action on the quick release is different than the set I had been using, so it was hard to tell when it was fully latched or not. The ironic part was that one of the running jokes on the team for a couple years before this had been that I always tightened down my wheels too much and was risking damage. Unfortunately, this ended my race as I was just inside the free lap limit (I was real pissed to have just missed that). It was a shame because I was up with the lead group at the time and stood to do well.
