This is from the last collegiate race of 2002. Mike and I went up for the race. Dan Heinaman came along to spectate and help out (it was really appreciated) and Jared showed up to watch Sunday's race. The Castellans also made the trip up for the Sunday race, Mike's last collegiate event. We also spent a lot of time with Ben and Simon from Rutgers.

I threw this picture in here to give you some idea of the up and down nature of the course. It was fairly unexpected, there was a lot of climbing going on for a little crit like this. The hills weren't any big deal, except doing repeats on them at speed made it harsh.

A real nice profile picture of Ben.
The men's B field. You can see Ben sitting up as he goes through the corner, probably trying to figure out if he can do something.
The Men's D field. You can see Simon and Mike in the center. The roads were real wide and everybody was taking advantage of it, especially at the start.
You can just barely make out Simon in the middle of all these UVM guys. I think it's a neat picture, it looks action-filled, like Simon's about to lunge from the group.
Simon rounding the corner. You can just see Jared and I off to the right.
Simon working it up a hill in the group. He chose not to use his Helium wheels for this race, they showed an extreme amount of flex in tight corners and it coulda been nasty on this course.

Mike working up one of the hills.

Mike and Simon in the middle of the pack.
Mike and Simon worked together a fair bit in a number of the races this year.
The start of the Men's C race. I uncharacteristically let myself get lined up in the back because I was kind of nervous about doing this C race. That's John Frey in the back taking numbers, making sure they agree with registration. Normally they wouldn't bother, but at Easterns they make the effort.

Joe coming up one of the hills.

This is towards the end, one of the UNH guys trying to figure out if he's got me or not when it comes to the last hill. To be honest, I can't remember what happened.
The race was pretty hard, what with the two big sprint hills, sharp corners, and rain, not to mention it being easterns with everyone pumped and me doing the C races for the first time. My stomach was just in agony like I'd done thousands of sit-ups and the Iceman just kept cracking jokes! He almost killed me, making me laugh that soon after the race. But, it felt bad in a good way. A real hard workout.

Simon, Mike, and the weird guy from Boston. These guys wound up near each other a lot in the races.
A nice picture of Mike, presumably after the race.

The poor guy was almost delirious after the race. However, it was really cool because in his last race, with his parents watching, he really put the effort out and did well. At the end of the race the announcer even declared that Mike was out there "puttin' the hammer down!" That, of course, was awesome and it was a real good time.
